We have secured a small volume of THE Panama Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda. This is grown, harvested, and processed by the Peterson Family who you can owe the credit of the discovery of the geisha varietal. In 2004 Daniel discovered that the cool temperatures and massive shade trees with high humidity allow the varietal to blossom and express such bright floral aromatics, fruity notes, structured acidity and high complexity.

The Esmeralda Special Geisha paved the way for the superstardom in Geisha you see today. This is a special blend of micro-lots from their three small farms - Jaramillo, Cañas Verdes, and El Velo. Expect Juicy Peach, Wild Strawberry, Pomegranate, Meyer Lemon and Orange Blossom

Rare, exclusive and fetching a heavy price tag, Geisha is often associated with coffees from Panama when in fact cultivation of the Geisha varietal only began there in the 1960s. Geisha is an original variety of coffee that was discovered in the 1930s in the mountains around the Southwestern town of Gesha, Ethiopia. Geisha trees grow tall and can be distinguished by their beautiful and elongated leaves. The quality of this coffee can be drastically improved when grown at extremely high elevation.

In the cup, the Esmeralda Geisha displays a good sweetness, clarity and sparkling flavor that may range from berry, citrus, mango, papaya, peach, pineapple, guava, and jasmine. Quite a bouquet for some palates. They are also recognized by the distinctive bergamot oil and orange peel taste, often described as Earl Grey tea!

 

Some call Panama the birthplace of the Geisha coffee. Well, the bean of course did not originate there, but Panama is definitely the place where it was commercially grown for the first time, made known to the world and where, at least for now, it found its perfect home.

The Geisha varietal was introduced to Panama by Don Pachi in the 1960’s, back then an employee of the Ministry of Agriculture, who brought it from Costa Rica as a varietal with resistance to leave rust and shared it with his neighbors. The resulting trees however, with their low yield and mediocre taste were considered a flop.

But then the varietal got  the chance to really show what it can do, by being planted and grown at high altitude (about 1.600 mts and up) and in a climate and in soil that would later turn out to provide its perfect home. It began to call the attention of judges and other international coffee connoisseurs, for the first time at the 2004 Best of Panama competition, and continues to surprise ever since, with a flavor and an aroma profile so different from anything else coming out of Central or Latin America.
